Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is third among the most common endocrine disorders after diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease with a prevalence of 0.1–0.4% in the general population.
The prevalence of pHPT increases with age, with an excess incidence of pHPT evident in women more than 45 years of age.
The incidence of pHPT in women of childbearing age has been estimated at 6 to 8 cases per 100,000 population per year and probably underestimated because of nonrecognition and to selective reporting of only those cases that have associated complications.
